Our Mission
Chicora is a Columbia, South Carolina public, non-profit heritage
preservation organization founded in 1983. Our work includes archaeological and
historical research throughout the Southeastern United States, public education
(primarily right here in South Carolina), and work in conservation and
preservation with museums, libraries, archives, historic organizations, and
private citizens. With years of experience and hundreds of projects, we are a
leader in preservation efforts.

Programs
Chicora is a leader in archaeological and historical research, public
education, and preservation/conservation activities. To find out more about how
we may be able to help you or your institution, click on the topics below.
- Archaeological and Historical Research
- Working with business partners, government agencies, or other
organizations we provide archaeological surveys, cultural resource surveys,
site assessments, site documentation, and data recovery. We also provide
brief overviews, reconnaissance studies, and cultural resource assessments
for properties not yet purchased to help in due diligence activities.

We help prepare National Register nominations, documentation for
historic markers, and historic site documentation. Related to our
educational activities, we also provide public interpretation of
archaeological and historical sites, including articles, booklets, and
tours. Related to our preservation and conservation activities, Chicora
maintains a full conservation lab and routinely conducts conservation
treatments of stone, metal, leather, and wood items.

- Public Education
Chicora Foundation provides a broad range of in-class programs on
archaeology and history for grades 3 through 12. We also have developed a
range of curricula materials to help teachers make the past come alive and
also provide teacher workshops.

Occasionally we also offer summer teacher
training. Chicora also publishes a range of public booklets on the
archaeology and history of various South Carolina sites. Our quarterly
newsletter, Chicora Foundation Research, also provides a wealth of
information on preservation issues.
- Preservation and Conservation
Our preservation work focuses on broad topics such as care and
handling of collections, disaster planning and recovery, integrated pest
management (IPM), environmental monitoring and controls, mold, and fire
safety. We offer a range of professional workshops and seminars throughout
the Southeast. We also offer on-site
preservation assessments and consultations in these issues, as well as
staff training workshops.

For lay audiences we provide workshops such as
"Preserving Your Family Treasures," often through historical sites or
libraries. We also have a range of published preservation guides. Our
conservation work includes archaeological collections and cemeteries.
Cemetery Preservation and
Conservation of Stone and Ironwork
- Chicora Foundation also has a very active program in cemetery
preservation -- working to help preserve cemeteries through recordation
and research.
