Leonard Pitts, Jr., a columnist with the Miami Herald, noted in a column
entitled
"America Repeating a Moral Failure" that "We Americans have a talent for
disregarding the lessons of the past, for deluding ourselves that we live
somehow beyond the reach of history." It seems likely to us that one reason for
this is that our students seem rarely taught to explore American history with a
critical eye. Therefore, we have developed this page to examine events in our
history that are often overlooked, and yet which have extraordinary importance
making informed decisions about events today. We hope that teachers will find
information here useful in teaching the relevance of American history to today's
citizens.
